Tears, Tears, and More Tears

I am not usually a sentimental person or one that cries at movies and such. But lately I have been watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition and I always end up teary eyed. I am so touched by the kindness and generousity of the shows regulars, but more by the service done by the 100's of volunteers who come from all over the states to help build a house in a week. It is incredible. They work night and day and are happy to be there. I am also inspired by the stories of the families that they serve. Last week was a lobster fisherman who lost his arm in an accident, but still went out everyday, refusing all offers of help, to provide for his family. And a couple weeks ago was a woman with many foster children, all of whom were disabled or disfigured in some way. It takes true Christlike love to give that kind of service. If only everyone could be like that.

  1. We watch this show every week and nothing could have topped the 'Camp Barnabas' episode from a month ago.

But this weeks episode was shrouded with contreversy since it was reported on October 20th that Mr Goodall lied about his birthday so that a criminal record would be covered up. If ABC had known about the convictions (two drunk driving convictions and one for armed robbery... sorry, no pun intended) they may not have 'helped' that family. Here's the link to the CNN article:

Report: 'Makeover' winner has criminal record

Another show you might want to watch is "Three Wishes" on Friday nights. A few weeks ago they showed an episode that was filmed in Cedar City, UT.

Sorry to be a downer, and I'm not saying that the Goodall doesn't deserve help, but it makes you wonder.

  2. Robin and I used to watch Home Makeover but we got put off by the design team. It seems like the whole first 40 minutes of the show is all about them entertaining the camera. I mean seriously, Ty need to lose the bullhorn. I can't stand the commercialism either... "Oh, we need a towel rack. Let's take ten people and run to Sears and race around in shopping carts."
We love seeing the volunteers and the looks on the familys' faces (Got to have that TV Guardian on to avoid hearing the Lord's name taken in vain 200 times), but we got tired of the design team clowns.

  3. There was an episode of Extreme Home makeover about a month ago that was filmed in Bountiful when we were there last summer. Kinda fun to see pictures of home on TV. You start trying to pick out landmarks.

We have our weekly cry (or cries depending on the ep) during this show. Mike and I have decided that we are both babies when it comes to shows like this.

  4. The episode that was filmed in Bountiful was for my little sister's boyfriend's (yes, the 40 year old one), best friend. He actually was the one the baptized her boyfriend. They really needed the help. But they said after they moved in there was still a ton of stuff that needed to be "finished". I guess that's to be expected after only 7 days.

  5. Keli,
DId you watch that episode? Was Meg's boyfriend ever on camera? I didn't know what he looked like to watch for him.

  6. Yeah, he was on camera a couple of times. When the family came in and met the volunteers, he was one of the first to hug the guy. He had a major close up. He's cute, but he has gray hair, and he looks old. Because he is!

  7. I wondered if he was in that group of friends.

  8. I can't watch the whole episode (I agree with Jeremy re: the commercialism, etc.) but I like watching the last 5 minutes or so. That's the most feel-good part, anyway!
