I had my follow up visit today. Here is a picture of what they did to my ankle. They drilled two holes and ran polyester cords through to keep the bones tight together. The buttons are different because they push the rectangular ones through the hole, and then they catch on the other side when they pull it tight. Pretty cool if you ask me.
