Binky Fix

Hazel has 20 binkies (a couple are missing from the picture). She loves her binkies. But it was getting out of hand so we started limiting binky usage to her bed.
Well, it took a day or two but Hazel adapted to the new rules. She started asking to go "night-night" when she was ready to use her binkies. Bonus for us, naptime and bedtime are super easy now.
The new adaptation is that now, even though she just woke up half an hour ago, she is asking for "night-night" just to have her binkies!! She is crazy. So she just spent another half hour in her bed with her binkies to get her fix. I have a binky addict!

  3. I miss the binky babies. My last two won't take them.

    That picture is priceless!

I guess there needs to be a BA group for babies.

  4. Yeah, but look how happy she is when she gets her "fix"!

  5. The other benefit of having 20 different binkies of different varieties is that you never have to worry about losing THE binkie, and having a crisis.

  6. I have always only had two binkies (because you can't buy just one). Then with Natalie I've bought more, but they get lost, so I never seem to be able to find more than two at a time.

I'm ready to toss them (I always have by the time they were one) but with child number four I'm wondering if I'm ready for the battle.

    Hmmm.

  7. The other really, really pathetic thing was that a couple months ago, we couldn't find any of them, and had to buy a couple more.

  8. I would forget to bring one when I went out to do errands and then end up buying more while I was out. And yes, they all get lost sometimes. I'm trying to determine the best way to get off the binkies. Cold turkey? or lose them one at a time over a couple weeks?

  9. Betsy,
I remember when Carter was addicted to his binkies and his Toby train, you thought it was silly and that he could probably live without them. I am laughing now that you are in the same position. I think we always had 8 binkies around the house. I finally took away his binkies cold turkey. But, he still carries special treasures around in his hand everywhere (either a train or a car). They go to preschool with him in his backpack. His teacher does not care, because he never gets them out during class, he just has to know that they are near by.

  10. We are in the middle of a Binky battle right now. Henry kind of just out grew his when he was 2. Calvin, however, is putting up a fight.
I remind myself that out of all the Terrill Grandkids my kids seem to stop using theirs the earliest, even at 2 1/2 years, so when people make comments, I can easily ignore them.

  11. Hazel is my only child that has used a binky so this is all new. The boys had bears and blankets, Aspen had her thumb and a blanket. This binky thing is just a new frontier. But she has been getting her legs stuck in the bars of her crib at night so I think it's time for a big bed. But I don't want to do a big bed until she doesn't have binkies. I don't want her up in the middle of the night looking for binkies that fall on the floor while she is sleeping. This is all such a convoluted mess!

  12. I've never seen a 5th grader with a binky. (Keep that in mind!) They will give them up as soon as they find a suitable replacement.

I've had 6 kids use binkies - we took Bonny's away at 16 or 17 months because she kept throwing them into the gearshift mechanism in our VW and it got to be pretty irritating. She didn't seem to mind. Just became very attached to her blanket.

Big Harry took Little Harry's away from him one Sunday evening - and then took off for a meeting and expected me to enforce the ban! After that I said, either you stay and enforce it every night until it's over or you let me take care of it.

After that it was my call - and I left it up to the kid - and they all gave it up before 3.

P.S. That Sunday night I told Harry he could have 20 miniature marshmellows to take the place of his binky. He thought it was a good trade. The next night he got 15. Then 10 - after that he didn't even ask for them.

  13. haha...I just love the mini-marshmallow substitute.

Theo's been sucking on binkies since day one...okay, more like day 2 or 3, but anyway he uses them occasionally, usually when he's tired, but now that he's found his fists he prefers those. Regardless, we've got like 12 binkies scattered all over. Usually I can find one when I need it.

I don't know what I'm going to do when he gets older. At this rate maybe he'll give them up within a few months and focus on his hand. I haven't decided if I care or not...mostly I just don't want a 5-year-old with a stinky thumb.
