"If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear"

Well we are preparing for Hurricane Rita to hit the Texas coast on Friday. It will still be a category 1 hurricane when it reaches the Austin area. They say that if it is still a category 5 hurricane when it hits it will be the biggest in recorded history to hit Texas. Many of the evacuees from the gulf coast are coming to Austin. Mostly we will receive a lot of rain and up to 70 mile an hour winds. So I think I might take down the basketball standard and the trampoline. Otherwise we have gassed up the cars (Nate had to wait in line for 20 mintues) and are going to fill up our water coolers (all the water is gone from the stores). I'm sure we'll be fine and not badly affected by the storm. But better safe than sorry. We'll probably lose power and gas prices will go up again. And there will likely be some flooding (fortunately our house is on the top of a little hill). But this part of Texas receives a lot of severe weather anyway. Anyway, I've included a link to the TV news station if you are interested.

They are calling this a Texas-sized hurricane. The hurricane is almost 600 miles across -- big enough to nearly cover the entire state of Texas. (Everything is bigger in Texas--event he weather!)

It's at times like these that you remember all the warnings and counsel from our leaders that we need to be prepared and have food storage and supplies. You never think you'll need it and then a situation comes along and you are so glad to be prepared. There is truly a peaceful feeling to being prepared. I am glad that we don't need to rush out and get anything. The Lord has prepared the way for us if we heed His counsel.

  1. i'm not sure which i prefer - not knowing when an earthquake will hit or knowing when a hurricane will hit. bruce prefers knowing. maybe we should move to texas.

i agree about the preparedness factor - makes a big diffrence - esp when you think about providing for your kids.

  3. Luckily we are south enough that we'll get (at the worst) 50 mph winds and 2-4" of rain on Saturday.

You should have seen all the cars lined up at the gas station last night as I was coming home from work at 9 PM.

    We're prepared.

  5. Update:

THey now think that the path Rita will take will be more east of us now, directly through Houston unfortunately. So we will just get 1-3 inches of rain and 30 - 50 mph winds. We've had thunderstorms worse than that. SO I think we'll be okay.

And yes Hester is still coming to visit. And since things look like they'll calm down, I will be going to California with Nate afterall. I'm sure the kids will be fine here with Hester.

  8. We watched the hurricane hit her 'landfall'. It's crazy to know that is so close to someone that is family. We are really glad that your ok! Thanks for also doing the 'research' the other day. Jake found out in my bank account that I was lying and her trapped me. So now he knows. Bummer.
