UnMomlike

Today, as I was listening to the radio on the long drive to Dallas, it struck me that there are some things that I like that are probably decidely unmomlike. So here is a list of a few things I came up with while driving.
  1. I love Bottlecaps and candy.
  2. I love to eat cookies and cake for breakfast (and frequently do).
  3. I love to listen to music really loud in the car with the windows rolled down and the bass loud (Although I am flexible on the windows part.)
  4. I like dancing like I was in college (mosh style - which is not really dancing, more like jumping up and down with lots of other people).
  5. I love hopscotch and own 4 hoppy-taws.
  6. I like to lick the spoon, especially after making brownies.
  7. I like to play with fire.
  8. I love to build sandcastles.
  9. I still write things on my hand to remind myself to do things.
  10. I go barefoot everywhere.
  11. I sit on the kitchen counters.

Anyone else unmomlike (or undadlike or unadultlike) in some way?

  1. I also sit on my kitchen counters - even while Jeff is telling my kids that we don't sit on counters. We all lick spoons when making cookies and cakes and yelling at the top of your lungs is permitted outside (inside it becomes too much).

Being a mom can be so much fun sometimes. There is no one to tell you to stop.

  2. I love candy too and have to sneak it because I don't think my kids need it as much as I do. Same with the cookies and cake for breakfast. I lick spoons, go barefoot and sit (sometimes even stand) on kitchen counters.

To add a few, I still love to do cartwheels and handsprings and I talk in strange voices and accents sometimes--but only to my kids. I chew gum like a cow all the time and love to read books laying on my stomach on the floor. I'm sure I'll think of a ton more after I post this.

I think I might have a harder time figuring out the adult things I do. (What? I'm not 16 anymore??)

  3. I have the philosophy that I can afford to eat high-calorie desserts as long as I don't totally stuff myself with food first. So sometimes I'll do it in lieu of a meal! A Dove Bar for breakfast? Sure! Just not for breakfast lunch AND dinner! (I don't do this often, but I think it's okay in principle).

I eat raw dough (bread, biscuit, sweetroll etc)

I also confess that when I'm alone and have made some treat involving batter, I get every last little drop--usually with a spatula, but i'm not above canine-style methods.

I seem to regularly throw my clothes on the floor and often don't make my bed. But i'm trying to really make a habit to keep everything tidy all the time, so that I can teach my kids to do so to without hipocracy.

i'm irresponsible about getting to bed at a reasonable hour. no one makes me, so I often stay up regrettably late (even when I'm sick!) :-(

I love to go on trips alone...which has never felt very momlike and has caused me no small amount of guilt over the years (that's the easiest "gift" anyone can give me...to let me take a trip somewhere).

    I procrastinate

i don't clean up the house as much as i suspect other moms do

I am bad about meal preparation

a way i'm different from my mom is in the TYPE of music I like...my parents managed to raise us with the idea that if it wasn't classical/opera or MoTab, it was wicked. Somehow I learned to like a whole lotta stuff they'd NEVER abide!

i still have my original teddy bear that is as worn as the Velveteen Rabit ever got.

my house looks like a kid decorated it without any real sense of style or put together "look". Alas, I am not proud of this.

basically, i still need to become a grownup!

  5. 1. When I burp, I laugh instead of saying, "excuse me."
    2. I love to play Ms. Pac Man and sometimes I sneak and play on Sundays.
    3. I climb on the kitchen counters instead of using a chair to reach the top shelf. But at least I don't use the cupboard pulls to hang on to when I'm jumping up.
    4. I love to eat ice cream with a spoon straight from the pint.
    5. I don't mind going out without make-up.

  6. I also sit on the counters. It is one of my favorite spots to sit and talk to Sean. But I think I win hands down for the unmomliest article of clothing. I have a shirt that says "I heart dirty rocker boys". It thoroughly embarrasses my mom when I wear it, but I love it.

  7. I have a lot of bad "mom" habits too. Most of them have already been named. It must be a Kerksiek thing to have cookies and cake for breakfast because Jacob does it, my kids now do it, and sometimes I even do it. I have a t-shirt too that says, "Look but don't touch" across the front of it, (I only bought it because it was on clearance).

The REALLY bad habit I have is I don't go to bed at a decent hour. For example, I have to get up at six in the morning and I just got home from painting and I am sitting at the computer typing. The worst was when McKay was in Kindergarton. I had just had Cruz and was lacking a lot of sleep. I would get up, drive McKay to school, come home and go back to bed. Mind you that Jake was still in bed as well as the other kids. Then I would wake up and go pick up McKay 2 and 1/2 hours later. I thought I must have been the only parent(s) to go back to bed after taking their child to school. I really need to go to bed earlier!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I always thought licking the spatula/bowl was a very momlike thing. My mom always did that. Sometimes she shared.

And I do it too. I don't share though, because Matt thinks it's gross.

The other night I decided I need to get some egg substitutes just so I could make brownies and eat the whole thing without cooking it.

  9. I love to eat in front of the TV
I have a t-shirt that says "my boyfriend is cuter than yours"
I rock out to all music
I have a myspace account under an assumed name
I drive a muscle car-when it is running
I stay up way too late reading or watching tv or just too late in general
Should I keep confessing all of these unmom-like behaviors?

  10. Going to be too late is a very momlike thing - the reason you notice it is because if you were not a mom, you could probably sleep in!

I still lick the bowl - that's the only reason I make cakes - I don't like to eat them baked!!

The most ummomlike thing I do is read when I ought to be doing other things - but I suspect many moms do that - we just think we shouldn't be doing it. I grew up coming home from school to mountains of laundry in the living room and my mom lying on the couch reading.

Her sage advice - which I have always tried to follow - "Never do anything when your kids are asleep that you can do when they are awake!"

And when we got home, she instructed us to fold the laundry!!

  11. Undadlike (although I think when dads do things like this, people don't find it that surprising)
    Playing video games.
    Peeing on campfires.
    Buying toys--not for the kids.
Using TOO much lighter fluid to light the charcoal.
Screaming like a little girl on a good roller coaster.
Picking your nose on your drive home (good nasal heigene?)--no eating, only flicking.

  12. I'm glad that I am not the only one. And reading all of your comments reminded me of all the other things I do that i didn't post. I guess no one ever really grows up. There are just so many things I would rather do that act like a grownup. As for favorite tshirts that can be an entirely different post. Maybe with photos to prove it!

  13. I guess that the most un-momlike thing that I like is to be ALONE> I like to go to the store alone, watch TV alone, go to movies alone, go shopping alone, etc. Dale was always asking me in our young married life to take one of the kids with me to the aforementioned activities and I always declined. I wanted to be alone. I too read when I should be doing other things but I take my time when I can find it. Now that I am working and the maid is on vacation, I find myself still taking my time and thinking "she will be back in a week or so, the work can wait that long". I know I am getting spoiled but that is life. I still sit on counters and although I don't lick the bowl (because the eggs here you really CAN'T trust) I would dearly love to.

  14. Her sage advice - which I have always tried to follow - "Never do anything when your kids are asleep that you can do when they are awake!"

I just have to say (is this an unmomlike comment, or just unladylike?) that if we'd followed the advice above, we would never have had any kids!
