Scaring Myself

With Nate in gone on business I should know better than to watch or read scary stuff. But I am very forgetful sometimes. So yesterday I was watching Criminal Minds on TV and scared myself to death. The episode was about a man breaking into peoples houses as they were about to leave on vacation and torturing them and then killing them. I only made it halfway through the show and was becoming paranoid so I had to turn it off. I don't know what it is about being the only one awake in a big house at night that will get me every time. It's okay as long as Nate is there to protect us I guess. I don't know why I watch those kinds of shows anyway. I know that they aren't good. So I think I am making a new start and I am going to just put my TV away. I've got a list of 75 books to read , so that would be a better use of my time.

  1. Betsy, I can completely identify. There are so many crime shows out there now, it's out of control. And they're all pretty bad! Subject, content, writing, acting...yet they all scare me if I watch them. The only one I'll watch anymore is Law & Order.

A year or so ago, when the show Medium first came out, I watched about half of the series premiere before I had to turn it off because it made me so upset. Part of the problem with those shows is they're so graphic. And a lot of them depict or discuss pretty explicit sexual crimes. My mind--and spirit--just can't take it!

  2. Hey Betsy. Having our tv break was the best thing that ever happened. We no longer watch any of the shows that we used to watch. I can tell a difference in the kind of spirit that we have in our house. There is not as much contention.

  3. I was obsessed with Law and Order, but now I can only watch the original. The other ones are too creepy. I have taught myself to be addicted to happy, fluffy shows, such as Gilmore Girls.
I should probably teach myself to not be addicted to any television, which might happen since we don't want to pay for cable when it goes up to $42 a month.

  4. i agree - i don't watch anything scary - even remotely scary. maybe it's because i live in the sticks, or have really bad dreams - but i quit scary shows/movies 7 years ago and i've only had one nightmare since.
and i'm not scared hanging around the house alone. it really is a blessing.

i have a friend who lays awake almost every night convinced someone is going to break into his house and kill him. he also loves scary movies - go figure.

    anyway - end of rant.

  5. So, for your book list and reading pleasure, False Memory, by Dean Koontz.......You'll find him in the book section next to Stephen King.

What's amazing, is just how many really BAD movies my kindergarteners have already seen in their few short years.

  6. I scare myself just reading Mary Higgins Clark and Tolkein and Susan Cooper and Robert Jordan. I never do Dean Koontz or Steven King. Just watching the movie trailers or seeing the posters and book covers makes my overactive imagination go wild and then I am really scared.

As for kids watching inappropriate movies, I find myself being very picky about what I am willing to let them watch. I prefer that they don't even watch cartoons that aren't on PBS.

Nate showed them Twilight Zone the Movie last year (against my wishes and better judgement) and it took them months to get over being afraid of the dark, especially Isaac. Phoebe is right...it's better to just watch and read things that make you feel good. Reality is bad enough, I don't need to choose to pour more of the same into my mind and spirit.

  7. You are an inspiration. We have so much junk coming into this house through various sorts of media. It would feel soooo good to just get rid of it. The kids have been sick lately so we've had the t.v. on A TON. I think we'll join you on a t.v. fast. (Can we live without Lost?! We'll have to think this over.)

  8. I guess I am just lazy. TV is too easy to watch and books are so time consuming. For the last year we have had DVR and I have not had a nightmare ... I guess it was the commercials that were causing all the problems.
